Artist Statement

I've always been better at using words to translate my thoughts, feelings and ideas. I can re-write what I want to say until its perfect. As a child I was constantly reading and babbling off to whoever had the misfortune of watching me. I could talk your ear off about anything- and that hasn't changed. My favorite thing to talk about, to write about were movies and television- everything that I watched - my mind would form an opinion. Why Charmander was the best Pokémon, Why Robin Hood is one of the best Disney movies and Blue from Blue's Clues is in fact a girl- I would argue until I was blue in the face. The number one thing that I liked to talk about was what I saw- or the lack of what I saw.

There's always been a lack of diversity in most of the media I have consumed. There was never enough or an accurate depiction of how people of color lived their lives. If there was a person of color it they would be the sidekick. There were shows like That's So Raven or Tiana , that would showcase such strong, educated and real characters- but they were so far and few in between all the same recycled troupes that it was easy to get discouraged and feel a disconnect. It's important to have representation of all kinds because its important that kids have someone who looks like them or experiences things they do. Which is why I chose to study Media.  Media and how we view the world are intertwined in a never ending circle. what we see on tv- the stereotypes, the troupes - all become ingrained in our minds and then reflect in how people judge and treat each other. Those actions and ideas are then displayed in full technicolor on all the screens we watch. I want to be able to not only create the Media but also be able to continue  the discussions about the Media people want to see. That's the kind of media I wish to create - something that everyone can partake in and create together.
